The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs is dedicated to protecting the rights of citizens and protects the public from fraud, deceit and misrepresentation in the sale of goods and services. The Office of Consumer Protection (OCP) is the primary investigative section for consumer complaints. The main responsibility of the OCP is to enforce the Consumer Fraud Act and its regulations. Additionally, OCP operates the Consumer Service Center, which is the central clearinghouse for consumer complaints and referrals. This Division is also targeting the State’s older citizens in an effort to identify and assist victims of fraud. Identity Theft - Information & Assistance. Elder Fraud Investigations Unit educates consumers regarding their protection and rights. Offers consumer information, checks the complaint history of companies, stores, and service providers, and checks the current license status of more than 80 professions. Complaints must be submitted in writing. However, you can call for information and advice on the best way to proceed when you have a complaint. The Division of Consumer Affairs receives more than 3,000 home-improvement-related complaints each year. Warning signs: 1. Worker requests a large payment before work can begin. 2. Demands cash. 3. Says there is no need for a written contract. 4. Does not have a business address or a State license number. If you become a victim of identity theft, file a police report and keep a copy of it in case your creditors need proof of the crime. Never give out your Social Security Number over the phone or in person to a stranger.
