The Weehawken Public Library makes its home at 49 Hauxhurst Avenue, in a historic building constructed somewhere between 1904 and 1910. Originally the home was built for the son of William Peter Sr., wealthy brewer/beer baron of the William Peter Brewing Company in Union Hill (later renamed Union City). Germanic in architecture style, the home was built as a miniature replica of a castle on the Rhine River. After changing ownership several times, the property was sold to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for tunnel construction. However plans to demolish the home were revised, and the Port Authority deeded ownership to the Township of Weehawken. In September of 1942 the library opened its doors, remaining virtually unchanged until a renovation in 1997 was undertaken. The 1997 renovation and expansion was completed in 1999 and the library reopened to rave reviews. The Weehawken Public Library Multi Media Center is now ADA complient and features 25 computers for public use, a historical room, community room, updated children's reading area and much more.
